Questa edizione di Light Art in Italy Nr. 6 - Temporary Installations è focalizzata su lavori realizzati dagli artisti della luce nel 2013. Come per precedenti edizioni, ai fini di una maggiore comprensione delle opere da parte dei lettori, che possono essere non solo addetti ai lavori, ma anche studenti o persone che si avvicinano a questa arte per la prima volta, si è pensato di allegare un DVD, con i video che ci sono stati forniti dagli stessi artisti o reperiti su Youtube, fornendo così un ulteriore elemento di lettura delle opere.

A fronte delle previsioni circa la vertiginosa crescita della popolazione urbanizzata nei prossimi decenni e dei cambiamenti climatici, il testo si pone l’obiettivo di indagare il tema dell’architettura in rapporto con l’acqua come possibile strategia sostenibile urbana ed architettonica per recuperare nuovi suoli, per densificare i tessuti urbani esistenti con nuove funzioni pubbliche ed abitative utilizzando superfici inutilizzate e per applicare soluzioni a basso impatto ambientale e consumo controllato di energia e risorse.

Il testo è articolato in tre sezioni. La prima, "Radici e prospettive", ripercorre con testimonianze il contesto culturale a fondamento della disciplina e in cui sono state definite le peculiarità che hanno caratterizzato, dagli anni Ottanta a oggi, la linea culturale in particolare della Tecnologia dell'Architettura a Milano. Nella seconda, "Ricerca", gli interventi illustrano i mutamenti sociali e produttivi e la rapida evoluzione degli scenari tecnico-scientifici, per la necessità di aggiornare le competenze disciplinari e individuare nuove opportunità di sviluppo del settore. Nella terza, "Didattica", emerge il ruolo centrale della Tecnologia dell'Architettura nella didattica del progetto, ai diversi livelli della formazione nell'ambito dell'Architettura, con una particolare attenzione alle relazioni con la ricerca e la produzione edilizia. Come contributo al processo di rigenerazione dell'identità dell'area tecnologica milanese, il testo propone una chiave di lettura critica del momento attuale e la sottopone al confronto nazionale.

This project emerges as part of the urban studies and fieldwork done with URBZ in the city of Mumbai for the Istanbul Design Biennial 2012. The research aims to describe the phenomenon of homegrown neighborhoods in Mumbai and their role within the urban dynamics. Starting from a pragmatic position of accep-tance, the objective is to seek the distinctive and characteristic features of this context in order to think of a different approach to interact with this phenomenon. The prototype, developed in Politecnico di Milano in the masters thesis and further resear-ches, is meant to define, according to the entropic character of informal settlements, how this energy can renew the urban system. The purpose is to orient the growth of these neighborhoods through a weak strategy, able to control without fixing the urban form, in relationship with the socio-economic fabric. The final result is a naive but genuine vision, without the ambition to give a definitive answer of how to think about a diffe-rent action upon these neighborhoods. It is a vision that grants them the right to survive as an active and productive part of the urban system. 0-n Collection of Master Thesis of Politecnico di Milano within the Theory of WeaknessDirector and Coordinator: Elisa C. Cattaneo "0-n" is a collection of master thesis which I oversaw as supervisor at Politecnico di Milano. These books are a platform of heterogeneity, which find their common field in the theory of weakness, as imperfect and manifold way of knowledge. The aim is to experience an alternative method for contemporary spaces, able to regenerate the stabilized ideas of design. They are more experimental and vital texts/tests than verification procedures: this attitude brings them away from a strictly educational approach. They can be read according to two levels of meaning: in their specific contexts and as open platforms for contemporary researches. Almost all of them are focused on processual values and on project transdisciplinary, in order to promote a cognitive space before a real one. I provided the students with fews thematic lines (a sense of short-circuit, trial, process of meaning), which were underlining an interpretation of knowledge in a horizontal sense, as Gilles Deleuze had defined.These topics have been independently developed by the candidates, so that they can be considered as authors of a new idea. I instructed this learning and researching method, because I belive that the secret of an effective education in to coinvince each student to be able to build his own vision of the world, without stereotyped positions.I am finalising the object of education in the freedom of intelligence, and not in the rules of disciplines, by broading the students' needs and points of view. Cattaneo     Notizie sugli Autori » Giacomo Ardesio Teaching assistant and lecturer at Politecnico di Milano, he graduated with honors in Architecture with a thesis titled A Swarming City, Patterns of Interference, developed between Mumbai, Istanbul and Milan in partnership with URBZ.Between 2012 and 2014 he worked between Italy and India following the path defined in this book in order to continue this investigation. Since 2013 he is part of the independent research agency WeakCircus. His main interests involve emerging forms of urbanism and ecologies and the definitions of of non conventional tools for design. » URBZIt is an experimental urban research and action collective which organizes collaborative workshops, facilitates hands-on research projects, creates urban forms and concepts, and develops web content about urban space and places since 2008. It has shown its work at the Istanbul Design Biennial in 2012 and will showcase again at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in November 2014. Il lavoro di ricerca si propone di indagare l'accessibilità al territorio dell'alta Val Trebbia nelle sue diverse accezioni, attraverso la distribuzione territoriale dell'offerta cercando di mettere in luce punti di forza e squilibri socio-economici, e ponendosi la domanda se vivere in un territorio marginale, spopolato, sia negativo e significhi essere emarginati. La ricerca focalizza l'attenzione su coloro che abitano i luoghi in modo permanente e come questi, seppur considerati marginali, debbano essere accessibili ai residenti, garantendo una qualità della vita accettabile, rendendo il luogo vivibile e soddisfacente. Oggetto di studio è l'accessibilità in alta Val Trebbia in provincia di Piacenza; un'area che presenta situazioni di criticità legate proprio all'accessibilità, alla mobilità, alla difficoltà a fruire dei servizi primari, principalmente quando questi gravitano su e/o attorno a un polo con il rischio di una possibile ulteriore marginalizzazione dei comuni più isolati e lontani dai nodi del trasporto pubblico. L'agevole accesso della popolazione ai luoghi di lavoro, studio, consumo, e delle merci ai luoghi di destinazione, la disponibilità di adeguati approvvigionamenti energetici e idrici, la possibilità di collegamento alla rete dei flussi informativi internazionali, sono tutte condizioni di crescita dei sistemi locali oltre che di garanzia di qualità della vita per la popolazione che vi risiede. Il libro riporta i risultati di un' indagine svolta sul territorio.

Dealing with informality means dealing with spatial and morphological situations, with conditions and dynamics that are di°erent from the ones existing in a "top-down" designed area. The informal is a wide multifaceted chapter engaging a great variety of ÿelds. As an architecture scholar, I expanded my research ÿrstly at urban level, then at the architectural, ecological and energy level. I also considered necessary to frame the issue from the socio-statistical, historic and referential point of view, through a general outline of the situation. Studying and interve-ning in the existing relations of a "bottom up" dimension show a dynamic process, an ever-changing endogenous mechanism. To deal with informality does not mean to work in the absence of regulations, rather it means to keep facing standards di°erent to the ones of formal cities, which represent examples of our Euro-pean culture. He lived one year in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he studied and worked in favelas contexts. His research is focused on the development of informal cases as paradigm of contemporary cities. Lorenzo Degli Esposti Lorenzo Degli Esposti holds a degree in Architecture and a Phd in Architectural and Urban Design from the Politecnico di Milano, where he is now adjunct professor of Landscape and Infrastructure Architecture and coordinator of the intensive international course Athens Poli9 - The Art of Building Cities. In 2009 he founds, and has been directing from then on, the independent and not-for-proÿt research agency Architectural & Urban Forum - AUFO - whose aim is the development of studies, research and projects on the contemporary city. A sessant'anni di distanza dalla prima edizione dell'Antologia di Piero Bottoni, la selezione di edifici moderni pubblicata nel 1954 continua a costituire una rassegna significativa dell'architettura milanese del primo Novecento. Una rassegna rappresentativa del percorso che ha accompagnato la nascita e l'affermazione del movimento razionalista, ma anche un'illustrazione esemplare della prima storicizzazione di questa esperienza da parte della cultura architettonica del secondo dopoguerra. Ripercorrere oggi l'itinerario proposto da Bottoni costituisce un viaggio alle radici di quella stagione creativa che ha reso la Milano degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta un punto di riferimento internazionale per l'architettura e per il design, ma fornisce anche l'occasione di misurare direttamente le trasformazioni che questo patrimonio ha subito in oltre mezzo secolo di vita. Il senso ultimo di questo libro - frutto del laboratorio Milano Moderna avviato nel 2009 all'interno di un corso di Storia dell'architettura contemporanea del Politecnico di Milano è infatti quello di sensibilizzare studenti, cittadini e turisti all'uso consapevole di un patrimonio architettonico e urbano che appartiene a tutti e che deve poter accogliere le sfide dell'attualità senza tradire la propria identità materiale e culturale.

The particular geopolitical condition of the West Bank is subjected in this research, of a wide disciplinary re˝.ection.Occupied territory after the Six Day War of 1967 by the state of Israel, the West Bank can be considered as a unique and experimental design case for its spatial and territorial arrangement and as a paradigmatic case of contemporary government and territorial modiÿcation. The project, or rather the strategy proposed, is structu-red from the consideration that the geopolitical conditions inside the West Bank territories should be considered in order to use the complexity of the place as the most important design parameter from which re-starting. The research is moving away from the classic statutes and veriÿed Spatial planning disciplines, and rather gets closer to ecology as a new way of designing and programming the large scale. Jason RebillotHe is an architect working at the intersection of political economy, political ecology, and urban transformation. Oltre a svolgere un ruolo di rilievo nelle vicende del modernismo brasiliano, Lucio Costa (1902-1998) ha contribuito per più di quarant'anni, come dipendente del Serviço do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional, allo studio e alla conservazione del patrimonio storico del suo paese. Trattando congiuntamente queste due trame della biografia professionale e intellettuale dell'architetto, la cui complementarietà apre inediti scenari sull'originalità dell'esperienza brasiliana rispetto ai più noti percorsi europei, il libro indaga il processo di elaborazione delle strategie culturali attraverso le quali Costa ha costruito un'impalcatura teorica capace di tendere un ponte tra passato e presente, legittimando la "nuova tradizione" dell'architettura moderna come espressione di una presunta "linea evolutiva autentica" dell'architettura nazionale. La militanza modernista e l'impegno per la tutela di un patrimonio sempre più minacciato dalla modernizzazione - e però accuratamente ricondotto a dei parametri idealizzati coerenti con il processo di elaborazione del proprio passato coloniale appaiono così come due componenti inscindibili di un più ampio e ambizioso progetto, proiettato sullo sfondo delle vicende politiche del paese e perseguito con fede "illuminista" nella potenzialità civilizzatrice dell'architettura: la costruzione di un Brasile moderno, dotato di una propria identità artistica e culturale.

DEMALLING Una risposta alla dismissione commerciale A response to the demise of retail buildings Gabriele Cavoto si è laureato in Architettura al Politecnico di Torino nel 2012. Ha studiato e lavorato in Italia e all'estero, ha partecipato ad attività didattiche presso il Politecnico di Torino e ha collaborato con il laboratorio Urb&Com del Politecnico di Milano. La sua ricerca si concentra sul fenomeno della dismissione delle grandi strutture commerciali e sui possibili interventi di recupero e trasformazione in risposta a questa tendenza, con particolare attenzione al contesto italiano. Gabriele Cavoto graduated from Politecnico of Turin in 2012. He has studied and worked in Italy and abroad, he has been professor assistant at Politecnico of Turin and he has collaborated with Lab. Urb&Com at Politecnico of Milan. His research concerns the decline of large-scale retail sites and the interventions for responding to this trend, with special focus on the Italian context. Negli Stati Uniti le strutture della grande distribuzione - shopping malls, big box stores e strip malls - sono interessate, da oltre due decenni, da importanti fenomeni di fallimento e dismissione. Questi luoghi, un tempo centrali nelle logiche del consumo delle metropoli americane e ora abbandonati, testimoniano il breve ciclo di vita degli edifici del commercio e delle attività in essi ospitate. Tuttavia, molte di queste strutture sono già state teatro di trasformazioni architettoniche e urbane piuttosto interessanti, interventi detti di demalling, che hanno riattivato gli spazi dismessi con funzioni e usi alternativi. Il sistema commerciale italiano non è certo immune dal problema emerso oltreoceano, anche se il ritardo accumulato nel suo processo di evoluzione rispetto agli Stati Uniti potrebbe permettere agli attori pubblici e agli operatori commerciali e immobiliari di intervenire - almeno in parte - sul fenomeno, di cui già si intravedono le prime avvisaglie. Le strategie di demalling trattate in questo libro rappresentano pertanto una risposta possibile alla dismissione commerciale, ma al tempo stesso possono influenzare l'evoluzione e la progettazione delle nuove strutture di vendita. Since two decades in the U.S. several large-scale retail sites - shopping malls, big box stores and strip malls - have been affected by failure and demise phenomena. These places, once temples of consumption, lie abandoned along the highways or in the suburbs of American cities, witnessing the short life cycle of retail buildings. Nevertheless, many of these structures have experienced interesting architectural and urban transformations. These interventions, called "demalling", have revitalized the abandoned spaces with alternative uses and functions. The Italian retail system is certainly not immune to the phenomena that emerged overseas and it shows already the first signs of common trends. However the delay accrued by the Italian retail system, compared with the U.S., could allow public actors and private retail and real estate developers to control and manage these problems. Thus, the demalling strategies outlined in this book represent a response to the demise of malls and big box stores, but at the same time could influence the evolution and the design of new retail structures.

Il testo affronta il rapporto tra design, linguaggi e pratiche narrative nel progetto per la fruizione del patrimonio culturale. La scala urbana e quella espositivo-museale vengono considerate ambiti privilegiati in cui esplorare nuovi modelli di fruizione culturale proponendo strumenti di analisi e paradigmi interpretativi design oriented.
