Social conditions of contemporary metropolises are rapidly deteriorating. Moreover, the physical framework with which we interact often reduces the possibility of spontaneous encounters. The transition to a sustainable future will require society to enact profound changes in many spheres, such as economy, politics, education... Urbanism and architecture can only contribute. The project aims to investigate this contribution. In order to fully comprehend why the aforementioned phenomenon is occur- ring, how they can be overcome and where they are manifested, a collage of relevant opinions has been created. This form of theoretical background encourages further and repeated interpretations. Considering that the topic of inquire is in itself ephemeral, what should be done, should be as such. As a possible solution, the project proposes a creation of a virtual and a physical platform, who’s use would result in reinforced social relations. Danilo Beronja Got his undergraduate degree at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture and his graduate degree at Politecnico di Milano. Worked as a teaching assistant at University of Belgrade. Took part in many international competitions and exhibitions, and won several prizes. His research focuses on social consequences of spatial manipulations.  Martina Sergi Martina Sergi graduated in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano with the thesis titled Divercity. She got her bachelor degree at IUAV University in Venice and she lived six months in Paris where she attended the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville. She exhibited her works at Triennale di Milano in 2015 and at Biennale di Venezia in 2012. Elisa C. Cattaneo Graham Foundation Grant Recipient in 2014, is adjunct professor in landscape design at the Politecnico di Milano. She researches on experimental ecological design and their theoretical implications. After receiving her degree in architecture, she attended a master program in strategic planning for architectural, urban, and environmental resources; in 2009, she received her PhD in architectural and urban design. She continued to develop her research interests as a visiting scholar at MIT (2010) and at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (2011-12). She is founder and director of the independent research agency WeakCircus, through which she studies, researches, and develops projects on contemporary urbanism related to the theory of weakness.

During the past thirty years, the night space of almost every major city changed dramatically, transforming from a state of mystified atmosphere filled with potential and adventure, to a state of dullness and boredom in which everything is expected. Technological development that occurred in this period and the period prior to it, brought in the emerging presence of light in the nighttime, occupying most of our public spaces. It is not the question whether the presence of light introduced such new conditions in night spaces of our cities or not, but the question is such presence of light designed to create dullness or it happened as a side effect of various different processes that occurred in recent urban design. What is clear, however, is that people have abandoned most valuable public spaces during nighttime, although such places are filled with people during daytime.The main goal of this work was to bring back the night to people. Milos Misovic Graduate of Politecnico di Milano, where he studied architecture. He previously studied at the University of Belgrade. His research is focused on the relationship between human behavior and urban design and how these can be improved using fragile elements such as light. Ugo La Pietra Ugo La Pietra is an architect, designer andessayist. He started painting in the sixties andgraduated in Architecture at Politecnico diMilano. His work is oriented towards the searchfor a balance between man and the environment,experimenting and overcoming disciplinaryboundaries. He was part of the Italianavant-garde groupsCenobio, the Radical Designand Global Tools. He directed the magazines In, Progettare Inpiù, Brera Flash and Artigianato tra arte e design. In 1980 he was editor of Domus magazine. He has received numerous prizes and awards including the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 for a search of furnishings for Gescal homes. Elisa C. Cattaneo Graham Foundation Grant Recipient in 2014, She is Adjunct Professor of Landscape Design and Architectural and Urban Design at the Politecnico di Milano. She researches experimental ecological urbanism and its theoretical implications. She was selected and invited candidate for the WheelWright Prize, award of the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. In 2004, after a degree cum laude in Architecture and Urban Planning, she attended the European Master in Strategic Planning for the Architectural, Urban and Environmental Resources. In 2009, she completed a PhD with Merit in Architectural and Urban Design, defending the thesis Void Density: a Relational Approach for Urban Design. In 2010, she was Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developing the research project: Space, Place, Context, Landscape: the Hermeneutical Circle US-Europe since 1956. In 2011-2012, she was Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, developing the research project: WeakCity: Notes on Landscape Urbanism. She is founder and director of an independent research agency Weakcircus, active in studies, research, and project development in contemporary urbanism within the Theory of Weakness. She is co-founder and co-director of B.L.U.E. (Building Ecological and Landscape Urbanism), platform of research on landscape as new strategy for contemporary cities. Since 2002, she has been the principal of her firm, active in public projects and international competitions.

The word ‘hutong’ came 700 years ago from the Mongolian language, meaning ‘water well’, a place where people settle for the water. Today in Beijing, it means a small alleyway or lane. They are typical of the Old part of the city and are formed by lines of siheyuan, ancient Chinese courtyard houses, in which most Beijing residents used to inhabit. Inseparable with the material fabric and space arrangement is the ‘hutong culture’. This is the repository of believes, values, rituals, orders, social codes and so forth, of the community. Nowadays, hutongs in Beijing are less than 1.000 and most of them have lost their basic nature.  The Old city is gradually vanishing. Many historical buildings are torn down. How can this present set of conditions be considered as an opportunity to forge new design solutions? The hutongs do not need utopian visions or massive projects, but rather common sense and answers for basic and tangible problems. The design solutions proposed are three strategies aimed to solve or drastically reduce  three main issues through systems of punctual interventions inside the courtyard units of the area. MARIA FRANCESCA DI ALESSANDRO  Currently based in Milan, she spent the last year researching about the Hutongs life after being a student of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Graduated from Polytechnic of Milan as architect, she studied also in Rome and Oxford. In China she worked for remixStudio, a young firm involved in hutongs rehabilitation. She is co-founder and art director of Timmerman, an art collective that creates testing environments across multiple media, combining music, visual arts, performances through online and offline spaces

Dice Edward De Bono: "Quando si richiede una soluzione veramente diversa e innovativa, che contribuisca cioè ad un reale passo evolutivo rispetto alle condizioni preesistenti, si deve stravolgere il ragionamento, partire dal punto più lontano possibile, ribaltare i dati, mescolare le ipotesi, negare certe sicurezze e addirittura affidarsi ad associazioni di idee del tutto casuali...". Ed è quello che faremo in questo libro: rompere gli schemi, sminuzzare le regole, guardare le forme e, soprattutto, non accettare le idee degli altri! Dobbiamo arrivare ad avere la nostra idea, e sarà la più bella. I bambini lo hanno capito e si divertono ad essere creativi. Lezioni di comunicazione visiva, di libertà, di progetti e di sogni da realizzare.

Il progetto è il frutto di un'intuizione. L'architettura, quindi, è il luogo dove avviene il dialogo creativo fra spazio e uomo, inteso come essere sia corporeo sia spirituale. Carl Gustav Jung pensava che l'intuizione fosse la percezione delle possibilità contenute in una data situazione. Le teorie della percezione, fondamentali per la disciplina architettonica, hanno anticipato diverse questioni che, solo recentemente, hanno trovato conferma nelle ricerche delle neuroscienze. Tali temi, come vere e proprie filosofie interne all.architettura, sono entrati nella sperimentazione di un nuovo metodo didattico proposto all'interno del laboratorio di progettazione del Politecnico di Milano, e in cui gli autori si sono interrogati sui meccanismi interni all.atto del progettare. Si è assegnato il complesso progetto di una nuova biblioteca che ha permesso di fare una riflessione approfondita sulla città. Avendo seguito alcune regole condivise è stato possibile equiparare l.esito del lavoro a un vero e proprio Test: ottanta persone fra studenti, docenti e ospiti hanno contribuito alla scientificità di questo esperimento.

Maurizio Zani è nato a Brescia il 6 febbraio 1969. La Società italiana della Tecnologia dell'architettura, SITdA, fondata nel 2007 attraverso la creazione di un ampio network di docenti e ricercatori universitari, ha l'obiettivo di sostenere la cultura della ricerca nell'area disciplinare e di offrire risorse per la formazione e la qualificazione dei giovani ricercatori, promuovendo studi di carattere teorico e applicativo, incoraggiando l'internazionalizzazione della ricerca e l'esplorazione di aree emergenti dell'innovazione tecnologica in architettura. Dal 2012 SITdA ha dato vita a otto cluster tematici che condensano skill e competenze interdisciplinari finalizzate sia a qualificare la domanda pubblica nell'esplicitazione delle proprie esigenze, sia a supportare gli operatori del settore edilizio nel proporre efficaci risposte progettuali, realizzative e gestionali. La pubblicazione rende conto del lavoro in progress di tali cluster attraverso la presentazione di contributi interdisciplinari, approfondimenti tematici e momenti di confronto con qualificate figure del mondo delle istituzioni, delle associazioni di settore e delle imprese.

Il testo affronta il tema del paesaggio ordinario, come chiave di lettura specifica, ma a nostro avviso cruciale, per una chiara comprensione della direzione che il progetto dello spazio pubblico può intraprendere e degli obiettivi che può perseguire nella trasformazione della città contemporanea. Negli ultimi anni, si è cercato, infatti, di individuare nuovi ambiti di ricerca, maggiormente definiti. Il titolo scelto per questo volume racconta perciò, sia l'ambito di ricerca più generale, che il carattere specifico del contesto territoriale prescelto. L'area industriale di Ala (TN), rappresenta in tal senso un caso studio paradigmatico per comprendere e verificare, attraverso gli strumenti del progetto architettonico e urbano, le nuove possibilità trasformative rispetto alle specifiche condizioni contemporanee. Ciò è stato possibile grazie alla preziosa partecipazione delle studenti del Laboratorio di Progettazione Architettonica 3, presso il Politecnico di Milano, Scuola di Architettura e società. Il volume è suddiviso in due sezioni, la prima che raccoglie una serie di saggi di carattere multidisciplinare sull'argomento e la seconda che rielabora le strategie proposte ed i risultati progettuali raggiunti dagli studenti ordinati secondo tre temi di approfondimento: Paesaggi produttivi, Paesaggi dello sport e della ricreazione, Paesaggi dell.energia e dell.ambiente.

Lo sguardo che questo ulteriore passaggio propone verso uno degli edifici più interessanti, belli e dibattuti dell'architettura italiana del '900, segue una linea trasversale che non lo fissa direttamente ma ne ricerca la sostanza componendo una selezione tra le voci degli autori che, dalla costruzione ad oggi, gli hanno rivolto la propria attenzione. Si tratta di una selezione ragionata della critica e della storiografia della Casa del Fascio di Terragni, che l'autrice percorre, sinteticamente, nel tentativo di offrire ulteriore strumento di indagine: una specie di "opera aperta" ricomponibile dagli sguardi di volta in volta diversi, legati al percorso di ricerca dei diversi lettori. Il Progetto del Moderno intende annodare le trame di una rete estesa al XX secolo, composta da una serie di episodi architettonici particolarmente significativi, inseriti nel proprio contesto storico e culturale. Il senso è quello di delineare un percorso di ricerca diretto ad una concezione amplificata della modernità quale spirito critico permanente del proprio tempo.

Environmental issues are critical all over Europe, but especially in Italy, where valuable natural resources are closely integrated with an equally important cultural heritage.  As a fact, environment, landscape and cultural heritage are part of a indivisible dynamic system continuously subjected to human actions that compromise the precarious equilibrium between nature and built environment. But the territorial quality is a crucial factor of the global competitiveness, to attract resources and to support the socio economic growth. In the Architectural Technology approach, the environmental project aims to develop a territory and to build the future heritage with the consciousness that every action is part of a broader scenario which combines local identity (cultural and landscape values), environmental qualities (ecological and ecosystem values) and socio economic factors. So, the cultural heritage enhancement is: management of usability, design of territorial networks, reuse of abandoned buildings, construction of new social opportunities, access to new services and experiences. Because of the inseparable link between its cultural, environmental and landscape heritage, the town of Mantova - Unesco site since 2008 and Italian Capital of Culture 2016 - represents a perfect site to experiment a multiscalar and transdisciplinary design approach for the cultural heritage enhancement. Elena Mussinelli, full professor in Architectural Technology at Politecnico di Milano. She has been Coordinator of the PhD program "Design and technologies for cultural heritage" since 2012 and Coordinator of the Bachelor Degree Program "Architecture and building construction" since 2011. Her research interests are in the area of process innovation, with particular regard to: enhancement of landscape and cultural and environmental heritage; interventions for the morphological, functional and technological requalification at the building and urban scales; environmental and technological design of complex settlement systems approached considering the interrelations between urban and natural components; environmental quality regulations (protection of resources, EIA, SEA, landscape insertions, environmentally-friendly technologies).

Luigi Bandini Buti, laureato in architettura al Politecnico di Milano nel 1955, comincia la sua carriera collaborando con i più importanti architetti milanesi fra cui Ignazio Gardella e Marco Zanuso. Con Franco Albini collabora alla direzione artistica della prima linea della metropolitana milanese, il più prestigioso cantiere del momento. Alla fine degli anni '60 è protagonista dell'introduzione dell'ergonomia in Italia. L'affermazione "La vera prevenzione si fa in sede di progetto" è sua di questi anni. Fonda la Società di Ergonomia Applicata con la quale effettua i primi interventi ergonomici sull'ambiente di vita e di lavoro, che gli procurano nel 1981 il Compasso d'Oro ADI per la ricerca. Alla fine degli anni '90 comincia ad interessarsi ad una nuova disciplina, il Design for All capace di dire che la diversità è una risorsa e che occuparsi dei "diversi" non è "buon cuore" ma una ineludibile esigenza del buon progetto. In questi 60 anni di carriera ha vissuto in prima persona lo sviluppo prorompente del Design italiano, è stato protagonista dell'applicazione dell'ergonomia ed infine ha contribuito agli sviluppi ancora in atto di un nuovo modo di progettare, il progetto per "tutti, disabili compresi" perché, afferma, "La diversità è una risorsa". È per questo che ha scritto questo libro non solo storico ma anche molto attuale, per testimoniare che "Io c'ero".
