"L'accrescersi della disponibilità di nuovi materiali e di sistemi tecnologici e informativi all'avanguardia, il manifestarsi dei danni causati da azioni indiscriminate sull'ambiente e l'esauribilità delle materie prime sono questioni aperte che suscitano una riflessione sul valore culturale del progetto e un desiderio di perimetrare il ruolo e le responsabilità dell'architetto nel contesto contemporaneo. Come architetti e come tecnologi dell'architettura sentiamo l'obbligo di fare chiarezza all'interno delle attuali possibilità d'azione che risultano senza dubbio ampliate e diversificate ma che, anche per questo, a volte possono disorientare, confondere, o comunque rendere più difficoltoso e intricato il percorso operativo del progettista. Questo contributo propone una dotazione aggiornata di riferimenti per il progetto contemporaneo - esperienze didattiche, di ricerca e professionali - con un'attenzione particolare alla dimensione tecnologica intesa quale momento privilegiato, analitico e sintetico al tempo stesso, di comprensione dei problemi. Vuole inoltre rimarcare una concezione del progetto che va alla ricerca delle radici culturali di ogni atto tecnico, e che crede nel suo valore alto e insostituibile di processo di conoscenza, di crescita e di rinnovamento, ai differenti livelli".

Se la prima emergenza è un soccorso, la seconda è un supporto. Le strutture innestate in questo intervallo assumo- no un carattere simbolico eccezionale: non solo forniscono un supporto, ma racchiudono dentro di sé l'energia e la possibilità del riscatto. Rappresentano, in un certo senso, l'ultimo atto dell'emergenza ed il primo atto ricostruttivo. Un importante settore della ricerca medica è orientato allo sviluppo delle sperimentazioni operate con cellule staminali per la ricostruzione di tessuti biologici danneggiati da malattie terminali o degenerative, che non trovano risposta nella medicina tradizionale. La cellula staminale è un cellula primitiva non specializzata pluripotenziale, autorinnovante, in grado di trasformarsi assumendo le caratteristiche del tessuto da riparare. Moduli prefabbricati indifferenziati della seconda emergenza, o le macerie stesse, innestati nel tessuto delle città devastato dal sisma, possono essere in grado di rigenerare il contesto urbano secondo un processo di differenziazione, specializzazione, mutazione, proliferazione ed induzione?

Partendo da questa finalità i singoli testi discutono le questioni aperte nel discorso sull'architettura nella fase degli ultimi CIAM (C. Baglione), i riferimenti culturali per O.M. Ungers (A. Trentin) e i contenuti del dibattito sull'architettura in Italia (S. Protasoni). L'intervento di Vittorio Gregotti, che nel 1959 si reca a Colonia insieme con Aldo Rossi per intervistare Ungers, racconta di questo incontro e analizza il ruolo di Ungers nel discorso teorico sull'architettura degli anni seguenti. Un testo introduttivo presenta le tre Prime Case e le colloca nell'insieme dell'opera di Ungers come punto di partenza di una riflessione ininterrotta sulla questione della forma in sé; una ricerca morfologica che diventa centrale nell'intera opera di Ungers e collega come un filo rosso gruppi di opere dal carattere a prima vista ben diverso. Si tratta di una ricerca continua su questioni fondamentali dell'architettura che non ha perso niente della sua attualità e sembra adatta a mettere in relazione la discussione del secondo dopoguerra al discorso attuale sull'architettura. L'idea di pubblicare questa raccolta di testi è nata a seguito di una conferenza che ha avuto luogo al Politecnico di Milano nel 2015 in occasione della mostra O.M. Ungers - Prime Case presso lo Spazio mostre degli Archivi Storici. La mostra presentava, anche con materiali inediti, tre opere che hanno un ruolo chiave nella fase iniziale del lavoro di Oswald Mathias Ungers tra il 1957 e il 1962.

Attraverso la raccolta dei contributi del gruppo di ricerca raccolto attorno allo Humanities Design Lab del Politecnico di Milano, il testo propone una riflessione sulla relazione tra design e scienze umane e sociali. L'intento è quello di mettere a confronto - attraverso brevi ma incisivi interventi portatori di saperi diversi per individuare ambiti tematici, approcci conoscitivi, metodi di confine e interferenza reciproca. La raccolta di saggi mira a estendere ed esemplificare il contributo innovativo delle discipline umanistiche nelle culture di progetto.

Fortezze nella storia e debolezze da difendere nella nuova visione di economia dei beni culturali. Le esperienze raccontate nel volume sui beni culturali in contesti nazionali ed internazionali ripropongono il tema del management. Il libro esplora emozioni e progetti e gli stessi titoli in campo risuonano come percorso di nuovo lemmario: sentinelle di pietra che diventano patrimonio riconoscibile, fortezze frontaliere che annunciano la fine dei confini, fortificazioni che appaiono come paesaggi fragili, fortezze e vie d'acqua che suggeriscono itinerari del sublime. Rimane la ricerca sui temi della valorizzazione e della sussidiarietà, con la loro difficile definizione. Lo stato produce leggi e regole per trasferire competenze fino a chiedere ad enti territoriali o a privati di sussidiarlo in un compito immane. Si scontrano visioni, il bene pubblico potrebbe essere prodotto non solo dallo stato ed il paesaggio si fa plurale ma senza tensione morale. Il rischio è elevato, ma con la crisi fiscale in atto la tutela rimane impossibile affidandosi alle risorse pubbliche. Perfino la contemplazione, auspicata da Keynes in alcuni momenti storici, ha bisogno di investimenti in cultura e la ruderizzazione non sempre è una traiettoria strategica. Un libro è sempre libertà di proposte e anche in questo caso i contributi si presentano come una polifonia contemporanea.

Questo testo analizza nel dettaglio tecnico alcuni tra i più significativi interventi di restauro e progettazione di un architetto contemporaneo. Grazie alla pubblicazione di particolari tecnici e documentazione inedita si consente al lettore di comprendere le motivazioni che stanno alla base di interessanti idee progettuali, ma soprattutto di verificare come queste scelte siano state realizzate concretamente. Il testo è rivolto a un pubblico molto vasto: dallo studente in architettura, al professionista affermato, a chiunque voglia cogliere l'occasione di poter confrontare le proprie idee progettuali.

Social conditions of contemporary metropolises are rapidly deteriorating. Moreover, the physical framework with which we interact often reduces the possibility of spontaneous encounters. The transition to a sustainable future will require society to enact profound changes in many spheres, such as economy, politics, education... Urbanism and architecture can only contribute. The project aims to investigate this contribution. In order to fully comprehend why the aforementioned phenomenon is occur- ring, how they can be overcome and where they are manifested, a collage of relevant opinions has been created. This form of theoretical background encourages further and repeated interpretations. Considering that the topic of inquire is in itself ephemeral, what should be done, should be as such. As a possible solution, the project proposes a creation of a virtual and a physical platform, who’s use would result in reinforced social relations. Danilo Beronja Got his undergraduate degree at University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture and his graduate degree at Politecnico di Milano. Worked as a teaching assistant at University of Belgrade. Took part in many international competitions and exhibitions, and won several prizes. His research focuses on social consequences of spatial manipulations.  Martina Sergi Martina Sergi graduated in Architecture at Politecnico di Milano with the thesis titled Divercity. She got her bachelor degree at IUAV University in Venice and she lived six months in Paris where she attended the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville. She exhibited her works at Triennale di Milano in 2015 and at Biennale di Venezia in 2012. Elisa C. Cattaneo Graham Foundation Grant Recipient in 2014, is adjunct professor in landscape design at the Politecnico di Milano. She researches on experimental ecological design and their theoretical implications. After receiving her degree in architecture, she attended a master program in strategic planning for architectural, urban, and environmental resources; in 2009, she received her PhD in architectural and urban design. She continued to develop her research interests as a visiting scholar at MIT (2010) and at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design (2011-12). She is founder and director of the independent research agency WeakCircus, through which she studies, researches, and develops projects on contemporary urbanism related to the theory of weakness.

During the past thirty years, the night space of almost every major city changed dramatically, transforming from a state of mystified atmosphere filled with potential and adventure, to a state of dullness and boredom in which everything is expected. Technological development that occurred in this period and the period prior to it, brought in the emerging presence of light in the nighttime, occupying most of our public spaces. It is not the question whether the presence of light introduced such new conditions in night spaces of our cities or not, but the question is such presence of light designed to create dullness or it happened as a side effect of various different processes that occurred in recent urban design. What is clear, however, is that people have abandoned most valuable public spaces during nighttime, although such places are filled with people during daytime.The main goal of this work was to bring back the night to people. Milos Misovic Graduate of Politecnico di Milano, where he studied architecture. He previously studied at the University of Belgrade. His research is focused on the relationship between human behavior and urban design and how these can be improved using fragile elements such as light. Ugo La Pietra Ugo La Pietra is an architect, designer andessayist. He started painting in the sixties andgraduated in Architecture at Politecnico diMilano. His work is oriented towards the searchfor a balance between man and the environment,experimenting and overcoming disciplinaryboundaries. He was part of the Italianavant-garde groupsCenobio, the Radical Designand Global Tools. He directed the magazines In, Progettare Inpiù, Brera Flash and Artigianato tra arte e design. In 1980 he was editor of Domus magazine. He has received numerous prizes and awards including the Compasso d'Oro in 1979 for a search of furnishings for Gescal homes. Elisa C. Cattaneo Graham Foundation Grant Recipient in 2014, She is Adjunct Professor of Landscape Design and Architectural and Urban Design at the Politecnico di Milano. She researches experimental ecological urbanism and its theoretical implications. She was selected and invited candidate for the WheelWright Prize, award of the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University. In 2004, after a degree cum laude in Architecture and Urban Planning, she attended the European Master in Strategic Planning for the Architectural, Urban and Environmental Resources. In 2009, she completed a PhD with Merit in Architectural and Urban Design, defending the thesis Void Density: a Relational Approach for Urban Design. In 2010, she was Visiting Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developing the research project: Space, Place, Context, Landscape: the Hermeneutical Circle US-Europe since 1956. In 2011-2012, she was Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, developing the research project: WeakCity: Notes on Landscape Urbanism. She is founder and director of an independent research agency Weakcircus, active in studies, research, and project development in contemporary urbanism within the Theory of Weakness. She is co-founder and co-director of B.L.U.E. (Building Ecological and Landscape Urbanism), platform of research on landscape as new strategy for contemporary cities. Since 2002, she has been the principal of her firm, active in public projects and international competitions.

The word ‘hutong’ came 700 years ago from the Mongolian language, meaning ‘water well’, a place where people settle for the water. Today in Beijing, it means a small alleyway or lane. They are typical of the Old part of the city and are formed by lines of siheyuan, ancient Chinese courtyard houses, in which most Beijing residents used to inhabit. Inseparable with the material fabric and space arrangement is the ‘hutong culture’. This is the repository of believes, values, rituals, orders, social codes and so forth, of the community. Nowadays, hutongs in Beijing are less than 1.000 and most of them have lost their basic nature.  The Old city is gradually vanishing. Many historical buildings are torn down. How can this present set of conditions be considered as an opportunity to forge new design solutions? The hutongs do not need utopian visions or massive projects, but rather common sense and answers for basic and tangible problems. The design solutions proposed are three strategies aimed to solve or drastically reduce  three main issues through systems of punctual interventions inside the courtyard units of the area. MARIA FRANCESCA DI ALESSANDRO  Currently based in Milan, she spent the last year researching about the Hutongs life after being a student of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Graduated from Polytechnic of Milan as architect, she studied also in Rome and Oxford. In China she worked for remixStudio, a young firm involved in hutongs rehabilitation. She is co-founder and art director of Timmerman, an art collective that creates testing environments across multiple media, combining music, visual arts, performances through online and offline spaces
